If you’ve read our previous blog post about low-code and why it matters, you've already understood that low-code development is a faster, more accessible way to create custom applications. Now that you know its benefits, where do you begin?

‍

Step 1: Understand What Low-Code Is

Good research is the first step in making decisions on software development.

Low-code application platforms provide multiple advantages, such as a visual development environment that allows you to build software applications with minimal hand-coding. However, if your processes have additional complexity, some of these low-code platforms can extend functionalities by developing custom code and integrating it into your applications.

These platforms simplify the development process, making it easier to create apps faster with fewer errors.

‍

Step 2: Identify Your Needs

Before choosing a low-code application platform, list your current IT and Business challenges and what you aim to achieve with low-code. Here are a few examples that you might want to consider:

  • Are you looking to speed up software development?
  • Which part of your software development processes you are considering to improve?
  • Do you need to improve collaboration between different teams participating in the software development process (e.g., Business Analysts, Subject-Matter Experts, software developers)?
  • Do you need to reduce or optimise costs?

‍

Answering questions like these will help you choose the suitable method and the right low-code platform.

‍

Step 3: Research and Compare Platforms

Look into different low-code platforms like Mendix, OutSystems, or Appian.

Evaluate them based on features, ease of use, community support, and pricing structures (be aware of hidden costs!), but most importantly, if they add value to your business and team.

Reading reviews and case studies can also provide valuable insights.

‍

Step 4: Pilot a Project

Start with a small, manageable project to see how the platform performs and how your team adapts.

This will give you first-hand experience and help you understand the platform's limitations or additional benefits.

Choose a particular Use Case from your Business, or a feature of an existing application that needs updating or upgrading, and implement a Proof of Concept (PoC) or a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) to see the magic happens.

Step 5: Train Your Team

If exists, make sure your development team is comfortable with the new low-code development platform.

Most low-code platforms offer training resources, webinars, and certification programs. Use these resources to get your team up to speed.

‍

Step 6: Monitor and Iterate

After deploying your first pilot project, collect feedback and monitor its performance.

Use this data and information to make necessary adjustments and continuously improve your software development process.

‍

Quick Tips for Success

  • Start Small: Begin with a smaller low-code project to minimise risk and learn the ropes;
  • Get Buy-In: Ensure that Business and IT Stakeholders understand low-code benefits to get their support;
  • Stay Updated: Low-code application platforms frequently update their features. Stay informed to take advantage of new capabilities;
  • Focus on User Experience: Always keep the end-user in mind. A well-designed app improves user satisfaction and adoption;
  • Collaborate: The visual development environment allows you to include all stakeholders in the software development process, such as software developers, citizen developers, business technologists and business analysts. Their inputs can provide valuable insights and lead to better products and digital solutions.
